👩‍💻Exploring and Analysing Digital Devices

Gender stereotypes in technology continue to create barriers for women entering and advancing in tech careers. This activity will help you understand these challenges while building confidence and creating supportive networks to empower yourself and your peers in the tech field.

🎯 Objective

The objective of this activity is to help you understand the various types of digital devices and their applications. By exploring and analysing these devices, you’ll gain insights into how they can be used to enhance productivity, convenience, and connectivity in your daily life.

🛠️ Activity Instructions

Part 1: Research and Identify Digital Devices â–Ľ
  1. 1. Research Different Devices: Conduct online research to explore different types of digital devices. Focus on the following categories:
    • Smartphones
    • Tablets
    • Laptops
    • Desktops
    • Wearables (e.g., smartwatches, fitness trackers)
    • Smart Home Devices (e.g., smart speakers, smart thermostats, security systems)
  2. 2. Compare and Contrast: Compare two devices from different categories (e.g., a smartphone and a tablet) and analyse how their features and applications differ. Consider factors like portability, performance, and the type of tasks each device is best suited for. Write a brief comparison (150-200 words) highlighting the differences and similarities between the two devices. Discuss which device might be more suitable for specific tasks and why.
Part 2: Practical Exploration â–Ľ
  • 1. Hands-On Exploration: Choose a specific tech skill you'd like to improve or learn. Examples include:
    • If you have access to any of the devices you researched, take some time to explore their functionalities. For example, if you have a smartphone and a tablet, use each device to perform tasks like browsing the web, watching a video, and managing emails. Note the user experience and ease of use.
    • Write a reflection (150-200 words) on your experience using the devices. Discuss how intuitive the devices were, any challenges you faced, and which device you preferred for specific tasks.
  • 2. Application Exploration: Write a short plan (100-150 words) that includes:
    • Choose at least one application (app) that is commonly used on smartphones or tablets, such as a communication app (e.g., WhatsApp), a productivity app (e.g., Microsoft Word), or a media app (e.g., Netflix). Explore the app’s features and how it enhances the functionality of the device.
    • Create a short review (100-150 words) of the app, discussing its key features, usability, and how it contributes to the overall user experience on the device.
Part 3: Group Discussion and Presentation â–Ľ

I explored the functionalities of both my smartphone and tablet. Browsing the web on the smartphone felt more intuitive because of its portability and quick access, but the smaller screen sometimes made reading long articles less comfortable. The tablet, on the other hand, provided a better experience for watching videos and managing emails due to its larger display and split-screen features.

One challenge I faced was typing long emails on the tablet’s touch keyboard—it was slower compared to the smartphone’s predictive text. However, the tablet’s layout made multitasking easier, especially when switching between apps. Overall, I preferred the smartphone for quick tasks like browsing and messaging, while the tablet was better suited for extended activities such as video streaming and email management. Both devices complement each other, enhancing productivity depending on the task.

📲 Application Exploration: WhatsApp
For my app exploration, I chose WhatsApp, a widely used communication app. WhatsApp’s key features include instant messaging, voice and video calls, group chats, and file sharing. Its usability is straightforward, with a clean interface that makes navigation easy even for beginners.

The app enhances device functionality by allowing seamless communication across borders, supporting both personal and professional interactions. I found the group chat feature particularly useful for collaborative projects, while the ability to share documents and images directly within chats saves time. WhatsApp contributes significantly to the overall user experience by combining convenience, speed, and reliability in one platform.

Gender stereotypes in technology

This refers to the assumption people make about what men and women "should" do in tech world.

Types of digital devices are electronic tools we use daily.A smartphone is a handheld device that combines calling, texting, apps, and Internet access.Tablets are bigger touch-screen devices, often used for reading or note-taking.PCs (personal computers) are desktops or laptops used for heavy tasks like work design, and gaming.Wearable are gadgets like smartwatches  fitness trackers you can wear on your body.Smart home devices include things like smart speakers or connected lights that make daily life easier and automated.

Smartphones and tablets are both mobile digital devices, but they differ in size, functionality, and the types of tasks they are best suited for. A smartphone is highly portable and fits easily in a pocket, making it ideal for communication tasks such as calls, messaging, social media, navigation, and quick internet browsing. Smartphones are designed for constant, on the go use and include features like cameras, biometric security, and mobile connectivity at all times.
A tablet, on the other hand, has a larger screen, which makes it better suited for tasks such as watching videos, reading e books, online learning, digital drawing, and light office work. Tablets often support accessories like keyboards and styluses, allowing them to function as productivity tools, though they are less powerful than laptops.
While both devices run similar applications and operating systems, tablets offer better visual comfort and multitasking, whereas smartphones excel in portability and instant access. For tasks like communication and daily navigation, a smartphone is more suitable. For education, presentations, and media consumption, a tablet is the better choice
