Formatting Text

We will now further enhance the reading capability of your assignment, by applying line and paragraph formatting. To achieve this, we will use the formatting option found under the Home ribbon in the Font and Paragraph groups.

The Font group has text specific options that among other determines the font, font size, font weight, text case, colour and characteristics. These options determine the look and feel of text.

The Paragraph group has paragraph specific options such as grouping lines under bullets and numbers, indentation and line height.

Activity Steps

Let’s start with the cover page.

1 Select the module code, assignment number and unique number line and centre the text.
2 With the same selection change the font weight to bold.
3 Select only the module code and change the font size to 48.
4 Select the assignment and unique number and change the font size to 28. Remember it will only change to the desired font once it has been highlighted.
5 Select the name, student number and date line and change the font size to 18 and the font weight to bold and centre the text.
6 The cover text is now beautifully formatted, but the spacing of the text can be improved.
7 Place the cursor at the beginning of the assignment number line and put in two line breaks by pressing the Enter key twice.
8 Place the cursor at the beginning of the name line and put in five line breaks by pressing the enter key five times.

The cover page is now easily readable.

1 Change the font weight of the Question 1 and Question 2 header to 26 and make the font weight bold.
2 Return to the Question 01 page and notice that the questions are list answers. Let’s number them by selecting the three questions and from the Home ribbon’s paragraph group click on Numbering list and  select Number Alignment.
3 On the second page you will notice a quotation from the Hamlet play in quotation marks. Select the whole quotation and change the font weight to italic by selecting Italic from the Font group and indent the paragraph by selecting Increase Indent from the Paragraph group.

Note: The indentation can also be achieved by pressing the Tab key with all the text selected. You should never use multiple spaces to simulate indentations.
